There is only one way this horrific abuse against minors get resolved and is abolishing any kind of life sentences for children. 60 years is still a life sentence. Childrens are not adults and should never be tried as adults. Abolish that repugnant practice and sickening "executive order" like this one and they won't be able to be held against minors.

Governor ensures 38 inmates stay behind bars for years

Quote
Governor Branstad has signed an executive order which ensures 38 inmates sentenced to life in an Iowa prison for a crime they committed when they were between the ages of 14 and 18 will stay in prison for many more years — decades in most cases.

A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling granted those inmates the ability to be re-sentenced and perhaps paroled, as five justices ruled mandatory life prison sentences for juveniles was unconstitutional.

Branstad’s action today commutes those sentences to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 60 years.

Bryan Stevenson, director of the Equal Justice Initiative who brought the test cases before the supreme court that led to the prohibition, called his actions "cynical" and said it "reveals the same politics of fear and anger that has led to decades of excessive and unfair sentencing".

Stevenson added that Iowa law does not permit the governor of the state to circumvent the courts. "There will be challenges to this and I believe they will be successful."
